RecycleMeter Calculator
See the climate impact of the plastic you recycle.
Choose a plastic type and enter how much was recycled. RecycleMeter estimates the greenhouse gas emissions avoided by not producing the same amount of virgin plastic, and shows what that means in everyday terms.

Virgin plastic versus recycled
*Net savings reflect cradle-to-gate mechanical recycling inventories displacing virgin petrochemical synthesis. Informed by: Franklin Associates / APR & US EPA WARM.
How It Works
Transparent formulas, scientific references and calculation assumptions.
Producing plastic from petrochemicals is energy intensive. Recycling recovers the polymer and skips most of that step. RecycleMeter estimates the difference.
Tell us what you recycled
Pick the plastic type and enter the weight, in kilograms or pounds. Pounds are converted at 1 lb = 0.453592 kg.
We apply the emission factor
Each kilogram is multiplied by the emissions saved when recycled material replaces virgin plastic.
We translate it
The total is expressed as trees, litres of petrol and smartphone charges, so it is easier to picture.
The formula
EF is an emission factor in kg CO₂e per kg of plastic. The difference is the net saving per kilogram, shown in the right-hand column below. For a monthly figure, the result is also multiplied by 12 to give an annual total.
Emission factors
| Plastic | Virgin | Recycled | Saved per kg |
|---|---|---|---|
| PET | 2.8 | 1.1 | 1.7 |
| HDPE / LDPE | 1.8 | 0.7 | 1.1 |
| PP | 1.9 | 0.8 | 1.1 |
| Mixed plastics | – | – | 1.3 |
kg CO₂e per kg. Average values for mechanical recycling versus virgin production. Mixed plastics use a single composite saving.
Everyday equivalents
| Equivalent | Calculation |
|---|---|
| Trees planted | CO₂ ÷ 21.7 |
| Litres of petrol | CO₂ ÷ 2.3 |
| Smartphone charges | CO₂ × 121 |
A mature tree absorbs about 21.7 kg of CO₂ a year; burning a litre of petrol releases about 2.3 kg; one kilogram of CO₂ corresponds to the electricity for about 121 smartphone charges.
Methodology & Science
System Scope & Recycling Methodology
All carbon displacement values and emission factors in RecycleMeter are modeled strictly on closed-loop mechanical recycling (collection, sorting, shredding, hot washing, and extrusion/compression molding). Unlike thermal chemical recycling (such as pyrolysis or gasification), mechanical recycling largely preserves the base polymer chains using physical force and moderate electrical heat, avoiding the massive energy footprint of fossil petrochemical cracking. Calculations reflect displacement of primary virgin resin pellets, following the principles of ISO 14044/14067 and informed by the US EPA WARM dataset (Franklin Associates & APR).
Calculation assumptions
- The weight entered is plastic that was actually recycled, not only collected.
- Each kilogram of recycled plastic replaces one kilogram of virgin plastic of the same type.
- Emission factors are averages for mechanical recycling. Real values vary with the facility, energy source, transport and material quality.
- Mixed plastics use a composite saving of 1.3 kg CO₂e per kg.
- Equivalents are illustrative. They do not mean trees were planted or fuel was saved.
- Results are indicative estimates, not a certified carbon footprint.

About
About RecycleMeter
Making Recycling Understandable. Making Everyday Actions Measurable.
RecycleMeter is a free, non-commercial sustainability education and awareness initiative of VOiLA Sustainable Technologies Pvt. Ltd., an enterprise incubated at the Foundation for Science, Innovation and Development (FSID), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.
Our objective is to make scientific methods of assessing environmental impact accessible and understandable to individuals, students, educational institutions, researchers and communities.
RecycleMeter currently focuses on helping users estimate the potential greenhouse gas implications of recycling different types of plastics, using established methodologies including the US Environmental Protection Agency's Waste Reduction Model (EPA WARM).
By translating scientific methodologies into simple, interactive tools, we aim to bridge the gap between sustainability research, public awareness and everyday action.
Our Vision — From Awareness to Measurable Action
We envision RecycleMeter evolving into an accessible, community-focused sustainability platform that helps individuals and organisations learn, measure and track the environmental implications of their everyday actions.
Over time, we aim to expand the platform beyond plastic recycling to include other aspects of resource conservation and sustainable living, encouraging communities to make informed choices and measure their progress.
Our belief is simple: When people can understand and measure the impact of their actions, they are better equipped to make sustainability a part of everyday life.
Disclaimer. RecycleMeter is intended for education and awareness. Environmental impact estimates are indicative and depend on the methodologies, emission factors and assumptions used. Estimates should not be interpreted as independently verified greenhouse gas reductions or complete product carbon footprint assessments.
